Welcome!

I am pleased to welcome you to the International Symposium on “Scanning Probe Microscopy for Energy Application and Quantitative Nano-Biomechanics”, Thursday,  April 5, 2012 (full day session) - Friday, April 6, 2012 (half-day session) at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. This symposium is organized by Northwestern University’s NUANCE Center, the International Institute for Nanotechnology (IIN), Initiative for Sustainability and Energy at Northwestern (ISEN) and Bruker Nano Surfaces Division, as a part of the NUANCE Center’s “A Decade of Excellence” initiative.

Plenary Speaker:
  • Prof. Tobin J. Marks, Northwestern University, USA

Featured Invited Speakers:

  • Prof. Christoph Gerber, University of Basel, Switzerland
  • Prof. Mark Hersam, Northwestern University, Evanston
  • Prof. Christine Ortiz, Massachusetts Inst. of Technology, Cambridge
  • Prof. Philippe Leclère, Universite de Mons, Belgium
  • Prof. Toshio Ando, Kanazawa University, Kanazawa, Japan
  • Dr. Chanmin Su, Bruker Nano, Santa Barbara
  • Prof. Julius Vancso, University of Twente, Netherlands
  • Prof. Paul Weiss, University of California, Los Angeles
  • Prof. Steve Dudek, University of Illinois, Chicago

The symposium will provide an informative, intellectually stimulating and mutually beneficial forum on the below topics:

  1. review  the progress in and prospects for the emerging field of SPM application in energy storage, polymers for photovoltaic applications, energy harvesting and energy dissipation imaging,
  2. explore emerging application of SPM in quantitative biomechanics of cellular and sub-cellular structures, and to develop therapeutic strategies along with in-vitro imaging, and
  3. discuss the rapid development in high-speed AFM and real-time dynamics of biomolecules in action, true 3D nanometrology with controlled environments to offer SEM-like user experience and instrumentation for high speed AFM development.
Please let us know if you plan to attend (registration is free, but required) by submitting your Registration prior to 3/22/12. Click here to download the symposium flyer.

I and my colleagues look forward to seeing you at the Symposium!

Best regards,

Professor Vinayak P. Dravid, Chair, Scientific Program Committee
Dr. Gajendra Shekhawat, Research Associate Professor, Materials Science and Engineering
Professor Mark Hersam, Materials Science and Engineering

Bruker Nano-Surfaces Division
Dr. Stephen Minne, Senior Director, Application Development and Training
Dr. Peter DeWolf, Director, Worldwide Sales Applications
